Answering service for Houston contractors
For Houston HVAC, plumbing, electrical and roofing contractors: an assistant for a city that averages over a hundred days above 90°F, with a hurricane season on top, that answers every call while your techs are in attics.
Written by Christopher Gillig, who files the carrier registrations behind these numbers and configures the assistants. Last reviewed October 6, 2026.
The short answer
Houston averages more than a hundred days a year above 90°F, so for an HVAC company the summer is one long surge, and hurricane season sits on top of it. An answering service here needs to take every call while the techs are in attics, treat no AC as an emergency when someone vulnerable is in the house, and put the address on every lead so dispatch can route. The assistant does that, and texts back anyone it could not reach.

What is different about Houston
- Bush Intercontinental averages 102 days a year at 90°F or above, with a July average high near 94°F, on the 1991 to 2020 normals. For a third of the year a failed air conditioner is a health problem, and the heating and cooling configuration lists no ac and not cooling as emergencies, not routine repairs.
- Houston's electrical establishments average about 20 staff each, against 13.5 for plumbing and HVAC, and only 70 percent are under ten people. Shops that size usually have someone answering in the daytime, so the calls they miss are after hours, which the assistant can be set to cover on its own.
- Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10. In Houston it overlaps the hottest months, so a storm that knocks out power produces air conditioning, electrical and roofing calls at once.
- Texas allows one party to record a call, and SB 140 brought texts under the state's solicitation law in 2025. The assistant records no audio, announces its notes anyway, and the text-back replies only to people who called.
An August afternoon in Katy
- An August afternoon in Katy: the air conditioning stops in a house where an elderly father lives with his daughter's family. She calls an HVAC company whose techs are all in attics.
- The assistant answers, gives its disclosure, and asks who is calling and what is happening.
- Not cooling and elderly are both emergency words, so the lead is raised as she explains.
- It takes the address and a callback number, reads them back, and if AC repair is bookable offers the earliest genuinely free slot.
- The emergency text follows and the dispatcher sees the raised lead ahead of the routine maintenance calls that came in the same hour.
What a Houston caller receives
emergency ack
Hi Dana, Northgate Heating has your message and is treating it as urgent. If this is a gas leak or emergency, call 911.
In a Houston August a caller with an elderly relative and no cooling needs to hear that the call is being treated as urgent. This says that and nothing it cannot keep.
appointment reminder
Northgate Heating is booked for Tuesday at 9:00 AM. Please clear access to the unit. Reply if anything changed.
Houston air handlers live in attics and closets, and condensers behind fences. A tech who has to wait for a ladder to be found loses time the next caller is waiting on.
Questions Houston contractors ask
- In August every call says no AC. Does everything become an emergency?
- No ac and not cooling raise a call by design, because in Houston heat they usually are urgent. You can change what counts as an emergency for your business, and the elderly and infant words still separate the calls to make first.
- What happens after a hurricane knocks out power?
- The assistant keeps answering as long as the phone network does, and the text-back goes out to anyone it misses. It takes the address on every call, which is what lets a crew plan by neighbourhood.
- Do I need a new phone number?
- No. The number your customers already have keeps working, and you decide per number whether the assistant answers everything or only what you miss.
